Understanding Diabetes Mellitus Causes!!

Diabetes mellitus cases are increasing at an alarming rate throughout the world especially in the US. People of all races and socioeconomic status can easily suffer from it. It is quite distressing for an individual to be diagnosed with this disastrous disease- diabetes mellitus. Diabetes mellitus causes are many as it is linked to several factors i.e.

Diabetes Cause 1:- High Levels of certain Hormones
There are certain hormones in the body which are antagonistic to the action of insulin like thyroid hormones, growth hormones, gestational hormones, adrenaline and adrenocortical hormones. When the concentration of these hormones increases in the blood stream, the effect of insulin hormone gets diminished causing diabetes mellitus.

Diabetes Cause 2:- Liver disorders
Certain liver diseases which lead to impaired glucose tolerance cause diabetes mellitus like hepatitis, liver cirrhosis.

Diabetes Cause 3:- Viral Factors
The diabetogenic viruses are known to cause diabetes mellitus. These viruses attack pancreas and cause autoimmune destruction of the beta cells resulting in insulin-dependent diabetes or diabetes mellitus

Diabetes Cause 4:- Obesity
An obese person usually have decreased insulin receptor cells in the blood and increased serum level of insulin. As a result, it affects the metabolism of glucose in the body causing diabetes mellitus.

Diabetes Cause 5:- Genetic factor
Diabetes is known as a hereditary disorder which may be passed on from the parents to offspring or along the family line

Diabetes Cause 6:- Pregnancy
Some pregnant women who had been normal before pregnancy are reported to have diabetes mellitus during their pregnancy or after pregnancy. The reason may be high levels of gestational hormone which works antagonistic to insulin. The other cause may be pregnancy induces stress.

Diabetes Cause 7:- Drugs
Drugs like thiazide diuretics and corticosteroids are known to cause diabetes mellitus in people who are genetically inclined

Diabetes Cause 8:- Impairment of glucose metabolism
• The impairment of glucose may be due to:
• Reduced production of insulin
• Altered insulin receptors
• Decreased number of receptors on peripheral cells
• Beta cells destruction
• Inactivation of insulin in the blood stream by antibodies
