Diabetes is one such devastating ailment that usually remains undiagnosed for long because its symptoms seem harmless and ofetn times normal. However it is quite necessary that diabetes get diagnosed within time so as to avoid the negative impact of it on the quality of life.

The following are the normal diabetes tests which are used for the diagnosis of diabetes:

Diabetes Test #1- Fasting plasma glucose test-

In this diabetes test blood glucose is measured with a minimum gap of at least 8 hours without eating. It is best done on an empty stomach in the morning. Fasting plasma glucose test is mainly used to detect pre-diabetes. If the fasting glucose level is 100 to 125 mg/dL, then the person may be suffering from a form of pre-diabetes known as impaired fasting glucose (IFG).

• However if the glucose level is 126mg/dL then the person is diabetic
• If it is 99mg/dL and below-normal, not diabetic
• 100 mg/dL to 125 mg/dL- Pre-diabetic
• 126 mg/dL and above- Diabetic

Diabetes Test #2- Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) -

This diabetes test is performed when the person has not eaten for least 8 hours and then 2 hours after drinking 75 grams glucose containing beverages Oral glucose tolerance test is also used to diagnose diabetes or pre-diabetes. This test is more precised than the above mentioned method.

If the gluose level is between 140-199 mg/dL, then it is a form of pre-diabetes known as impaired glucose tolerance or IGT. It means that the person has higher chance of experiencing type 2 diabetes but does not have it yet.

• If glucose level is 200 mg/dL or above- person is diabetic
• If glucose level is 139 mg/dL and below- person is non-diabetic or normal
• If glucose level is 140 mg/dL to 199 mg/dL- person is pre-diabetic
• If glucose level is 200 mg/dL and above- person is diabetic

Even gestational diabetes is diagnosed based on plasma glucose values obtained during the OGTT test.

Diabetes Test # 3- Random plasma glucose test

This diabetes test measure blood glucose level with regard to when you ate your last meal. However random plasma glucose diabetes test is performed to diagnose diabetes instead of pre-diabetes.

However the results obtained by this diabetes test get confirmed only after repeating the fasting plasma glucose test or the oral glucose tolerance test on a different day. If the blood glucose level is 200 mg/dL then the person must have diabetes with following symptoms:

• Increased urination
• Increased thirst
• Weight loss
• Fatigue
• Blurred vision
• Increased appetite
